Most explainers of Lakhpati Didi treat it as a single payment scheme, which it is not. We explain how the Rs one lakh annual income target is actually calculated, the activity portfolios that have produced the most consistent results, and why the initiative is best understood as a convergence platform rather than a stand alone benefit.
§ KEY TAKEAWAYS
- 01Target of moving three crore women SHG members into a sustainable annual household income of at least Rs one lakh.
- 02Implemented as a convergence platform that bundles NRLM, agriculture, animal husbandry, MSME and skill development support.
- 03Selected didis receive intensive hand holding, business planning support and bank credit linkages.
- 04Activity portfolios include dairy, poultry, mushroom cultivation, food processing, retail enterprises and drone services.
- 05Drone Didi component trains 15,000 SHGs to operate agricultural drones for rental to farmers.
What Lakhpati Didi actually is
Lakhpati Didi is not a stand alone benefit. It is a convergence initiative under DAY-NRLM that bundles existing instruments, SHG bank loans, community investment support, skill development under DDU-GKY, sectoral support from animal husbandry or agriculture departments, and market linkages through Cluster Level Federations, around a clear household income target.
The target is that the woman's household crosses Rs one lakh in annual income on a sustainable basis. The income is computed on the basis of an Income and Expenditure assessment carried out by the Cluster Level Federation, and is verified on a quarterly basis through the SHG's bookkeeping and the bank account.
The activity portfolio that actually works
Five activity portfolios account for the bulk of successful Lakhpati Didi cases. Dairy with at least three crossbred cows, poultry with at least 500 birds, mushroom cultivation with two cycles per year, value added food processing under PMFME, and retail enterprises linked to OneDistrictOneProduct.
Two newer portfolios are being scaled. The Drone Didi component trains and equips SHGs to operate agricultural drones for rental to farmers. The Solar Didi component trains members to install and maintain rooftop solar and to operate solar based micro enterprises such as solar dryers and solar cold rooms.
How to actually qualify
Qualification begins inside the SHG. The SHG must be in good standing, and the member must propose a Micro Enterprise Plan that the Village Organisation and Cluster Level Federation can certify as credible. The plan goes through the federation's appraisal process, which checks both the technical feasibility and the convergence requirements.
Once approved, the member is enrolled in the Lakhpati Didi tracker. From that point, convergence support is requested from the relevant line department, the bank linkage is arranged, and the federation monitors progress against the income target. Members who fall behind receive additional hand holding rather than being dropped.
Who qualifies
- 01Member of a Self Help Group promoted under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission for at least one year
- 02SHG is in good standing on the Panchasutra audit, with regular meetings, savings and repayment
- 03Member is willing to take up or expand a livelihood activity from the approved portfolio
- 04Household current income, as assessed by the Cluster Level Federation, is below Rs one lakh per year
- 05Member has not received similar enterprise support from another central scheme in the last three years for the same activity
Documents you'll need
- §Aadhaar of the SHG member
- §SHG membership and savings record
- §Bank account of the SHG and individual member with Aadhaar seeding
- §Micro Enterprise Plan prepared with support of the Community Resource Person
- §Approval from the Village Organisation and Cluster Level Federation
- §Activity specific clearances such as veterinary clearance for dairy or FSSAI registration for food processing
Common reasons applications are rejected
- SHG audit reveals irregular savings or non repayment, disqualifying the SHG from being a base for Lakhpati Didi support
- Enterprise Plan does not show a credible pathway to Rs one lakh annual income, leading the federation to defer approval
- Convergence with the relevant line department, such as animal husbandry for dairy, is not secured
- Bank account of the member not Aadhaar seeded, blocking interest subvention and capital DBT
- Same activity already supported under PMEGP or DAY-NULM for the household, breaking the one scheme per activity rule
Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct cash payment under Lakhpati Didi?
No. The initiative does not have a single cash payment. Support is delivered through convergence with existing schemes such as SHG bank loans, NRLM community investment, sectoral grants and skill development stipends.
Can I apply individually without being in an SHG?
No. Lakhpati Didi is open only to women who are members of a DAY-NRLM SHG that is in good standing.
What is the role of the Drone Didi component?
Drone Didi trains and equips 15,000 SHGs to operate agricultural drones for rental to farmers. Selected SHGs receive a drone, training, insurance cover and working capital support.
